New York Rangers vs. Seattle Kraken Betting Preview
Goaltending shapes this price more than anything else. Dylan Garand is the projected Rangers starter, although his start has not been confirmed. The 24-year-old has carried the net since Igor Shesterkin was ruled out for the season after a lower-body injury on Oct. 9. Garand is 6-6-1 with a 2.51 goals-against average and a .906 save percentage. He also made a career-high 32 saves Tuesday as New York beat St. Louis 3-1 to snap a four-game losing streak.
There is a wrinkle, however. Joonas Korpisalo came off injured reserve Friday, and the NHL.com projected lineup lists him as available for a possible season debut. Garand has appeared in 12 straight games. A Korpisalo start would be a material change, and every read below should be treated as provisional until the starters are confirmed.
Seattle’s crease is just as unsettled. Joey Daccord is the projected starter, also unconfirmed. He is 4-3-0 with a 3.53 GAA, and he made 25 saves in Wednesday’s 2-1 overtime win over Calgary. Philipp Grubauer has split the net with him this season. He is 5-2-1 with a 3.24 GAA, and he was pulled in his last start, a 6-2 loss in Calgary. In short, neither Kraken option has been reliable.
The Kraken are 9-5-1 overall and 5-2-0 at home. Still, the underlying numbers are thinner than the record. Seattle scores 3.47 goals per game but allows 3.53, and it has been outshot 456 to 382 over 15 games. Berkly Catton, Chandler Stephenson and Kaapo Kakko share the team lead with 12 points each. Meanwhile, Jared McCann (lower body) and Ryan Lindgren (upper body) remain out.
New York is 9-7-1, with an 8-2-0 mark at Madison Square Garden and a 1-5-1 record on the road. Adam Fox leads the team with 21 points, 19 of them assists. The special teams split is stark. The Rangers’ penalty kill ranks first in the NHL at 90.6 percent, while Seattle kills just 65.0 percent of penalties, which ranks 30th. The Kraken power play, at 21.6 percent, sits near the middle of the league.
The top units carry familiar names. New York projects Pavel Dorofeyev, Mika Zibanejad and Alexis Lafreniere together on its first line. Seattle counters with Bobby McMann, Matty Beniers and Jordan Eberle, and Beniers is coming off Wednesday’s overtime winner against Calgary.
Schedule matters on both benches. This is New York’s second game in three days after Thursday’s home win over Philadelphia, and it follows a cross-country flight. Seattle, by contrast, has not played since Wednesday. However, the Kraken fly to Helsinki after this game for two meetings with Carolina, so a look-ahead spot is possible. The last meeting went Seattle’s way, a 4-2 win at Madison Square Garden on Jan. 12 after trailing 2-0. Rangers vs. Kraken Prediction — Why Did This Total Climb Off Its Opener?
The market has already spoken on the scoring environment. This total opened a half-goal lower and has since been moved up. Once the shift in juice is factored in, the adjustment is modest, but it points toward goals. Movement alone is not a reason to bet. Here, though, it lines up with what the research shows.
Seattle’s goaltending is the core of the read. Both Kraken goalies carry a GAA above 3.20, and the team is allowing more than 30 shots per game. New York will also see power-play chances against a 30th-ranked penalty kill. At the other end, the Kraken have finished at a high rate, scoring 52 goals on 382 shots. Recent Rangers games have run high as well. Three of the four losses in their latest skid reached nine goals or more, including a 7-4 defeat to Ottawa. Overtime and the shootout both count toward the full-game total, and late empty-net goals often stretch one-goal games.
The case against is real. New York’s penalty kill ranks first, which blunts Seattle’s power play. Seattle’s finishing rate is also unlikely to hold, and its last game ended 2-1. In addition, the best number has already been taken, so this rates as a lean rather than a strong play. A Korpisalo start would strengthen the read, while two sharp goaltenders would weaken it.
The Pick: Over 6.5 (+105)
Rangers vs. Kraken Prediction — Does a 1-5-1 Road Record Tell the Whole Story?
New York’s road results are ugly, but seven games is a small sample. The process numbers point the other way. Seattle has been outshot by nearly five shots per game, and its record leans on finishing that rarely lasts. The Rangers hold the edge in net if Garand starts, and they hold a clear edge on special teams. On paper, the goaltending gap looks modest, a .906 save percentage against two GAAs above 3.20. However, it compounds against a team that concedes more than 30 shots a night.
Still, there is a fair case for Seattle. The Kraken are rested and 5-2-0 at home, while New York is on its second game in three days after a long flight. Garand’s workload is heavy, and the market has barely moved toward New York since the open, so there is no confirmation. This play and the first one both lean on Seattle’s goaltending, so they are not independent. The edge here is thin.
The Pick: Rangers (-130)
