Detroit’s Missing Safeties Are the Storyline Behind the Number
Most Week 1 injury news is noise. This is not. Branch and Joseph are Detroit’s two highest-leverage defensive backs, and losing both at once changes what the Lions can call. Branch tore his Achilles in early December. Joseph’s knee cost him the bulk of last season. Reserve/PUP keeps both out through at least early October, so this is not a one-week problem.
What replaces them is experience rather than range. Maddox signed a one-year deal in April, but the group is short on the ball-hawking that made Detroit’s secondary a takeaway engine. That matters against a Saints offense built to attack the middle of the field. New Orleans added running back Travis Etienne in free agency in March, and pairing him with Kamara gives Moore two-back personnel that forces a defense to declare its coverage early.
The counterweight is that New Orleans has to convert the opportunity, and the 2025 offense averaged 18.0 points per game.
