The 2026 edition of the Preakness Stakes shapes up as one of the most fascinating betting races in recent memory. With no Kentucky Derby winner in the field and a loaded group of 14 three-year-olds heading to Laurel Park, Saturday’s second leg of the Triple Crown could produce complete pace chaos.

That chaos is exactly what bettors should focus on.

A large portion of this field prefers to race on or near the lead, and when you start counting potential front-runners, you quickly realize there may be too much speed for everyone to get comfortable. If the fractions heat up early, this race could unfold very similarly to the Kentucky Derby, where late runners dominated the stretch drive.

That scenario creates major betting value on several closers — especially one longshot with elite connections.

Pace Scenario Could Decide Everything

This race has an unusually high number of pace-dependent runners.

Taj Mahal, Chip Honcho, Napoleon Solo, Corona De Oro and Pretty Boy Miah all prefer to race aggressively early. Iron Honor also does his best work close to the pace. That creates a dangerous setup for front-runners because several of these horses may be forced outside their comfort zone immediately out of the gate.

If the opening fractions become aggressive, the race should tilt heavily toward the closers.

That makes horses like Talkin, Ocelli, Incredibolt and Bull By The Horns extremely attractive from a betting standpoint.

Horse To Beat: Ocelli (6-1)

Ocelli enters as arguably the most proven horse in the field after finishing third in the Kentucky Derby. He actually made the lead briefly in the stretch at Churchill Downs before being run down late, which shows the type of finishing ability he brings into Saturday.

The concern is obvious: he still hasn’t won a race.

Still, his consistency against elite competition makes him one of the safest horses to include in every exotic wager. Tyler Gaffalione takes the mount, and his ability to save ground early could become critical if the pace melts down in front of him.

Best Value Bet: Talkin (20-1)

Talkin is the most interesting betting horse in the race.

The addition of Irad Ortiz Jr. is a massive jockey upgrade, especially in a race where timing the late move correctly could determine the winner. Talkin has quietly faced strong competition throughout the Derby trail, including graded stakes appearances in the Champagne and Blue Grass.

His recent running lines may not jump off the page, but the setup Saturday looks ideal.

Talkin should settle comfortably off the early pace while the speed horses battle up front, and at 20-1 morning line odds, he offers the best combination of value and upside in the field.

Most Dangerous Closer: Incredibolt (5-1)

Incredibolt may have had one of the sneakiest good Kentucky Derby performances in the entire field.

After racing in traffic throughout the Derby, he still managed to close from 14th to finish sixth while altering course in the stretch. With a cleaner trip and a slightly smaller field Saturday, he becomes a major threat late.

His Virginia Derby victory earlier this spring also showed he can finish strongly at longer distances, which makes him one of the most logical win candidates if the race collapses late.

Local Wildcard: Taj Mahal (5-1)

Taj Mahal brings one of the best local résumés into the race after going undefeated in three starts at Laurel Park.

Trainer Brittany Russell has dominated Maryland racing over the past several seasons, and Taj Mahal’s front-running Federico Tesio victory stamped him as a legitimate Preakness contender.

The problem is the projected pace.

If Taj Mahal gets pressured early by several other speed horses, he may be vulnerable turning for home. Still, local experience matters in major races, and he remains dangerous if he shakes loose early.

2026 Preakness Stakes Prediction

  1. Talkin
  2. Ocelli
  3. Incredibolt
  4. Bull By The Horns

Talkin gets the perfect setup for a career-best performance. The pace should be fast enough to set the table for the closers, and Irad Ortiz Jr. is exactly the type of rider bettors want in a chaotic Triple Crown race. Ocelli remains the most reliable horse in the field, while Incredibolt is capable of winning with a cleaner trip than he received in the Derby.

Bull By The Horns is the bomb to use underneath in trifectas and superfectas if the race completely falls apart up front.
