Big bopper joins Cain, others

The Royals’ recent teams have relied heavily on speed and timely hitting. Now, it’s time for skipper Ned Yost to add some thump to the offensive arsenal.

Veteran slugger Brandon Moss has agreed to a two-year, $12 million deal with the AL Central stalwarts. With the start of spring training just weeks away, online sports book Bovada.lv gives Kansas City odds of +3300 to capture the 2017 World Series. Eight Junior Circuit squads – Boston, Cleveland, Houston, Toronto, Texas, Seattle, New York and Detroit – are currently held in greater esteem.

Fresh off a campaign in which he belted 28 homers and drove in 67 runs, Moss undoubtedly brings a different dimension to Yost’s lineup. In fact, the former Cardinal holds the record for the longest tater by a left-handed swinger in Busch Stadium history. He’s no automatic out when a lefty’s on the mound either, carrying a .243 mark in 608 career at-bats against southpaws.

For all intents and purposes, Moss will replace Kendrys Morales in the DH role at Kauffman Stadium. Those anticipating anything close to Morales’ consistent .290-plus clip, though, need to pump the breaks. Moss, 33, has never hit higher than .256 in a full season. The Georgia native also slogged to the finish line last fall, mustering only nine base knocks over his final 110 plate appearances.

Nonetheless, Kansas City hopes that Moss’ tremendous raw power makes divisional opponents think twice about pitching around mainstays like Eric Hosmer, Lorenzo Cain and Salvador Perez. Even if fellow newcomer Jorge Soler steals more reps than expected, we’re not ruling out another 25-dinger effort from Moss. His ability to man multiple positions in the outfield should please Yost, too, as the Royals aim for their third playoff berth this decade.
