Mississippi State went 8-5 in the 2012 season and was 6-7 against the spread. Oklahoma State was 8-5 last year and 7-5 against the spread after winning at least 11 games the previous two seasons. These two haven’t met since 1999, with Mississippi State winning 29-11.

Oklahoma State walks into this season with one of the top offenses in the country. The Cowboys have averaged over 44 points and 520 yards per game the last three seasons and this year shouldn’t be much different. However, the Cowboys have issues at QB, as coach Mike Gundy has said both Clint Chelf and J.W. Walsh will both play on Saturday. The two combined for over 3,100 yards and 28 touchdowns a year ago as they split time. Both will look to lock on to receiver Josh Stewart, who caught 101 passes for 1,210 yards and seven touchdowns in 2012. While the Oklahoma State offense is strong, the defense could use some work. The Cowboys allowed 28.2 points and 422 yards last season. The team lacks playmakers, as they had just 25 sacks and an even turnover differential in 2012.
Mississippi State has been solid under coach Dan Mullen, but the Bulldogs haven’t quite turned the corner in the SEC. Last year’s team averaged 29.5 points and 382 yards per game on offense and should be better this year with its entire offensive line back and quarterback Tyler Russell entering his senior season. Russell threw for 2,897 and 24 touchdowns last season and he also has running back LaDarius Perkins to hand off to in the backfield. Perkins rushed for over 1,000 yards a year ago and will give the Bulldogs plenty of offensive balance. Defensively, Mississippi State is physical. The team allowed just 23.3 points and 387 yards per game in a tough SEC schedule in 2012. The Bulldogs have four starters back on the front seven, but will be unproven in the secondary, which could be an issue against the strong passing attack of Oklahoma State.
