Redskins vs. Saints Week 1 Odds
NEW ORLEANS, LA (The Spread) – Robert Griffin III will make his highly anticipated regular season debut on Sunday when the Redskins visit the Saints at 1:00PM ET.
WASHINGTON: The Redskins kicked off a new era this offseason when they traded three first-round picks in order to acquire the No. 2 overall selection from the Rams. With that selection they drafted Griffin, who won the 2011 Heisman Trophy at Baylor. While Washington might not have enough overall talent to stay competitive all season, the Skins will certainly be a more exciting team now that Griffin is under center.
NEW ORLEANS: No team in the NFL had a more tumultuous offseason than the Saints, who lost their head coach Sean Payton, their former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, their starting middle linebacker Jonathan Vilma, and their interim head coach Joe Vitt to the bounty gate suspensions. (And actually, Williams had already left the team in order to take the Rams’ defensive coordinator position). The team also lost their best offensive lineman in Carl Nicks but they managed to sign Ben Grubbs to fill in at guard and Curtis Lofton to take Vilma’s spot in the middle of the defense. With Drew Brees at the helm of the most explosive offenses in the league, New Orleans is once again ready to challenge for a postseason berth.
ODDS: The Saints opened as 8.5-point favorites but the spread has now jumped to 9 with 54% of the betting public backing New Orleans. The over/under total is currently 49.5.
TRENDS: The Redskins are 4-1 against the spread in their last five games on fieldturf while the Saints are 12-1 ATS in their last 13 home games, 9-1 ATS in their last 10 games overall and 8-1 ATS in their last nine versus the NFC. The over is also 5-1 in the last six meetings between these two teams.
