Blue Jays 2012 Season Odds
(The Spread) – Will this be the year that the Toronto Blue Jays finally snap their 18-season postseason drought?
According to oddsmakers, the Blue Jays are 16/1 to win the 2012 World Series and 30/1 to win the American League Pennant. They’re also 12/1 to win the American League East and carry an over/under of 81 for total number of wins in the regular season.
The Blue Jays were active this winter, acquiring pitcher Sergio Santos from the White Sox, outfielder Ben Francisco from the Phillies, catcher Jeff Mathis from the Angels and second baseman Luis Valbuena from the Indians. The team also claimed catcher Brian Jeroloman and right-hander Jim Hoey off waviers, while also inking shortstop Omar Vizquel, reliever Francisco Cordero and catcher Kyle Phillips.

Some of the Blue Jays’ key departures this offseason including third baseman Mark Teahen, catcher Jose Molina, and right-handers Jon Rauch and Frank Francisco. The team also parted ways with Brad Mills (in the Mathis trade), Myles Jaye and Daniel Webb (in the Santos trade), and Frank Gailey (in the Francisco trade).
OUTLOOK: Thanks to slugger Jose Bautista and ace Ricky Romero, the Blue Jays will have a shot to contend in 2012. In fact, they’re usually in the mix until fading in the second half of the season. It’ll once again be difficult for Toronto to outlast the Yankees, Rays and Red Sox in the AL East, but you can’t really count them out either. Assuming Bautista’s production doesn’t fall off the map and youngsters Brett Lawrie and Colby Rasmus can develop (or continue to develop in the case of Lawrie), the Jays will be in the mix until the end. Whether or not they make a playoff push down the stretch is the real question.
