2012 Reds MLB Season Odds

(The Spread) – After making a couple of big moves this past winter, the Reds are “all in” this season. Are they now the team to beat in the NL Central?

According to oddsmakers, the Reds are 20/1 to win the 2012 World Series odds and 8/1 to win the National League Pennant this season. They’re also 7/5 to win the National League Central Division and carry a total of 87.5 for number of regular season wins in 2012.

The Reds were busy this offseason. They exercised a $12 million club option and brought back Brandon Phillips, while also agreeing to terms with Ryan Madson, Ryan Ludwick and Andrew Brackman on one-year deals. The team also signed veterans Brett Tomko, Jeff Francis, Willie Harris and Dioner Navarro to minor league deals.

The biggest deal that the Reds made this offseason, however, was acquiring starting pitcher Mat Latos from the Padres in exchange for first baseman Yonder Alonso, starter Edinson Volquez, reliever Brad Boxberger and catcher Yasmani Grandal. Cincinnati also acquired reliever Sean Marshall from the Cubs in exchange for starter Travis Wood, outfielder Dave Sappelt and infielder Ronald Torreyes.

On the other side of the equation, Edgar Renteria, Ramon Hernandez, Fred Lewis, Jeremy Hermida, Francisco Cordero and Dontrelle Willis will not be returning to the Reds in 2012.

OUTLOOK: With the departures of Albert Pujols (Cardinals) and Prince Fielder (Brewers) from the division, the Reds are arguably the team to beat in the NL Central. The Latos deal gave the club a nice 1-2-3 punch at the top of their rotation as the former Padre joins Johnny Cuteo and Bronson Arroyo. The lineup is solid as well, although outside of Joey Votto this isn’t a team that will collectively hit well for average. Assuming the Cardinals and Brewers do take a step backwards without their respective sluggers, the Reds have a clear path to win the Central. After all, they’re only two years removed from winning the division and have upgraded their starting pitching staff.
