Orioles 2012 MLB Season Odds
(The Spread) – A lackluster offseason could leave the Baltimore Orioles behind the 8-ball again this season.
Oddsmakers currently list the Orioles as 150/1 long shots to win the 2012 World Series and 70/1 to win the American League Pennant. Buck Showalter’s club is also 100/1 to win the American League East Division and has an over/under of 69.5 for number of wins in 2012.
In his first off-season, Executive Vice President of Baseball Operations Dan Duquette essentially focused on adding depth to their pitching staff. The O’s signed starters Tsuyoshi Wada and Wei-Ying Chen, while also agreeing to terms with reliever Luis Ayala. As for position players, Baltimore added Wilson Betemit, Endy Chavez and Matt Antoelli.
On the trade market, the Orioles acquired pitchers Jason Hammel and Matt Lindstrom in exchange for Jeremy Guthrie. They also dealt Jarrett Martin and Tyler Henson to the Dodgers for Dana Eveland, and traded pitcher Randy Henry and shortstop Greg Miclat in exchange for catcher Taylor Teagarden.
If the Orioles are going to surprise and contend with the Yankees, Red Sox and Rays in the AL East, they’ll need their new pitching acquisitions to improve upon the 5.39 ERA from 2011. But despite the additions to their pitching staff, Baltimore will struggle to win over 65 games this season. Adam Jones, Nick Markakis and Mark Reynolds simply won’t be enough.
