INDIANAPOLIS, IN (The Spread) – What do the trends suggest about Sunday’s Super Bowl XLVI matchup between the Giants and the Patriots?
Oddsmakers have installed the Patriots as a 2.5 or 3-point favorite over the Giants for Super Bowl XLVI, but it makes you wonder why New England is favored when you look at the latest trends between these two teams.
The Giants are 5-1 against the number in their last six games against the Patriots while the underdog is 5-1 against the spread in the last six meetings between these two teams. New York is also 8-1 against the number in its last nine playoff games, 8-0 in its last eight playoff games as an underdog and 5-0 ATS in its last five games and last five games as an underdog, respectively.

New England, meanwhile, is just 1-7 against the spread in its last eight playoff games and 1-6 ATS in its last seven playoff games as a favorite. Jerod Mayo and the Patriots are 9-3 against the spread in their last 12 games following an ATS loss but just 1-3-1 ATS in their last five Super Bowl appearances.
As for the total, the under is 5-1 in the Giants’ last six games overall and 8-2 in their last 10 playoff games. The over, however, is 22-7 in the Patriots’ last 29 games overall and 24-8 in their last 32 games as a favorite. The over is also 5-2 in the Giants last seven games as an underdog.
Since 1994, there have been seven Super Bowl totals listed in the 50s and five of those games stayed under. The under is also 3-2 in the last five Super Bowls while the underdog is 3-2 over that same time span.
