Currently over 35,200 Public Bets have been placed on this game and Michigan is getting 66% of the wagers with the point spread of -3 against Virginia Tech on Tuesday night. Opening odds have Michigan as a 1-point favorite against the Hokies. The spread has slowly worked its way up to 3 points without any steps back, which means that oddsmakers are trying to get the public to wager on Virginia Tech.
Michigan is 10-2 on the season and 8-4 against the spread. The Wolverines were just 2-2 against the spread away from Michigan Stadium but were 7-3 ATS on turf this year. Michigan has been favored in 9 of their 12 games on the year and they were 6-3 against the spread in those games. With point spreads of 4 points or less this season, the Wolverines are 4-2 against the spread. The public probably likes Michiganβs combination of a fast offense behind Denard Robinson, and a defense that is sixth in the country in scoring at 17.2 points per game.
Virginia Tech is 11-2 on the season and 4-9 against the spread this season. The Hokies are 3-4 against the spread on the road and 1-1 in games on turf. Virginia Tech has been favored in every game they have played this season to this point. They had just one game that saw a spread below 4 points and they covered in that game, beating Georgia Tech 37-26. Despite having similar offensive and defensive numbers to Michigan, as they rank seventh in the nation in scoring at just over 17.2 per game, the perception of the ACC being a lesser conference probably comes into play in the public eye. The ACC is 2-4 in bowl games this year while the Big Ten is 3-6.
