2011 NFL Week 7 on FOX: Falcons vs. Lions Picks & Predictions

Falcons vs. Lions Week 7 Free Pick

(The Spread) – A pair of NFC playoff hopefuls will square off in Detroit today when the Lions host the Falcons at 1:00PM ET.

ATLANTA: The Falcons got back on track last Sunday with a 31-17 win over the Panthers in Week 6. With the victory Atlanta improved its record to 3-3 and 2-4 against the spread, although the Falcons have yet to cover a road game this season (0-3). Michael Turner paved the way with 139 yards and two touchdowns and now has 499 yards rushing and six scores. Meanwhile, Matt Ryan leads the team with 1,465 passing yards while Roddy White is off to a quiet start with just 373 yards.

DETROIT: The Lions suffered their first loss of the season last week in a 25-19 defeat to the 49ers. The loss dropped Detroit’s record to 5-1 on the year and 4-1-1 against the spread, which includes a 2-1 ATS mark at home. Calvin Johnson continues to assault opposing defenses, racking up nine touchdowns in just six games, while Matthew Stafford has thrown for 1,729 yards.

ODDS: The Lions opened as 6-point favorites at the Las Vegas Hilton but the spread has dropped like a rock since then. Detroit is now only a 3.5-point favorite at the LV Hilton, while the over/under total has fallen from 48.5 to 47.

FREE PICK: Take the under. Both of these teams have the potential to score but both offenses also have a tendency to get into funks as well. There’s no doubt that the Falcons will look to keep it on the ground again this week after what they did against Carolina last Sunday. Atlanta’s coaching staff is conservative by nature and with Julio Jones was again iffy because of a hamstring injury, chances are Turner will see plenty of action against Detroit’s suspect run defense. According to latest NFL trends, the under is 4-0 in the last four meetings between these two teams in Detroit and 5-2 in the last seven meetings overall.
