Miami Dolphins 2011 Season Odds
(The Spread) – The Dolphins were once again active in free agency this offseason but they failed to upgrade the one position that could bury them in 2011.
A year after hiring Mike Nolan as defensive coordinator, trading for dynamic receiver Brandon Marshall and signing versatile linebacker Karlos Dansby, the Dolphins were once again busy this offseason. Perhaps the biggest move they made was acquiring Reggie Bush from the Saints, but they also signed quarterback Matt Moore (Panthers), linebacker Kevin Burnett (Chargers) and brought back Jason Taylor.
But it was the move that didn’t happen that could essentially bury them.
The Fins were in talks with the Denver Broncos in regards to quarterback Kyle Orton and it appeared as though a deal would get done. But talks fell through and now Orton will remain in Denver, while Miami pushes forward with Chad Henne.
If his performance in the Dolphins’ preseason debut was any indication of how he’ll perform in the regular season, then Miami is in trouble. Henne was just 4-of-8 for 77 yards with a touchdown and two ugly picks, and was generally outplayed by Moore (11-of-18, 123 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT). If Henne continues to play poorly, we could see Moore win the starting job heading into the season.

Of course, Moore doesn’t necessarily instill much confidence either. He flamed out in Carolina despite having every opportunity to succeed. He’s athletic and flashes signs of being a capable starter, but he’s usually inconsistent and unreliable. Still, if Henne continues to drive guys like Brandon Marshall and head coach Tony Sparano up the wall, Moore will once again get his opportunity to shine.
Oddsmakers currently list the Dolphins as 55/1 long shots to win the 2012 Super Bowl and list their over/under total for wins at 7.5. Miami is also a 28/1 long shot to win the AFC this season and is +800 to win the highly competitive AFC East.
