Most Rushing Yards
After smoking the competition last year by rushing for 2,006 yards, the Titans’ Chris Johnson is favored to rush for the most yards in 2010.
In 2009, Johnson rushed for 590 more yards than the Rams’ Steven Jackson, who finished with the second most rushing yards at 1,416. The Jets’ Thomas Jones rushed for the third most yards at 1,402 and the Jags’ Maurice Jones-Drew rushed for the fourth most yards at 1,391.
According to oddsmakers from online sports book SBGGLOBAL.com, Johnson is +300 on the money line to rush for the most yards in 2010. His odds are followed by Adrian Peterson at +400, Frank Gore at +800 and DeAngelo Williams and Michael Turner, who each are +1000.
Jackson is +1500, which may be a steal if he can steal healthy.
With Chester Taylor now in Chicago, Peterson may get even more carries than the 314 he did last season. He finished fifth for most yards, rushing for 1,383 in Minnesota, although he must cut down on the fumbles (he had six last year). Still, he’s only two years removed from rushing for the most yards in the league, as he finished with 1,760 in 2008.
Gore is expected to have a big year in San Francisco, although if he’s going to challenge for the most rushing yards in 2010, he’ll have to have more than the 229 attempts he finished with last year. Although, only Jonathan Stewart of the Panthers rushed for more yards with less carries (1,133 on 221 attempts).
Speaking of the Panthers, Williams will certainly have his chances cut into by Stewart, making his value go down a bit. That said, both backs have to avoid injuries and if Stewart goes down for any length of time, Williams could have a shot at the most rushing yards.
Turner represents kind of a dark horse sleeper in this race because of the offseason he’s had thus far. Reports state that he is in tremendous shape and so far in preseason, he’s looked great. While he may not get as many carries as he did in 2008 when he finished with 1,699 on 376 attempts, he’ll definitely be the rock of the Falcons’ offense this season.
