Offensive ROTY Odds
Dallas Cowboys’ receiver Dez Bryant is turning heads in Arlington these days, but does he have what it takes to emerge as the 2010 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year?
According to oddsmakers from online sports book SBGGLOBAL.com, Bryant is +450 on the money line to win the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award in 2010. He has the same odds as San Diego Chargers’ rookie running back Ryan Matthews.
Since the creation of the award in 1967, running backs have won 30 out of the 43 Offensive ROTY trophies, while only four quarterbacks have taken home the honor. That makes Sam Bradford (+800), Jimmy Clausen (+1000) and Tim Tebow (+2000) less appealing to bettors this season.
That said, the last quarterback to win the award was in 2008, when Atlanta Falcons’ signal caller Matt Ryan was the recipient of the honor. Of those three quarterbacks listed above, Bradford appears to have the best chance of starting this season, while Clausen and Tebow have some work to do if they want to beat out Matt Moore and Kyle Orton, respectively.
Along with Matthews, there are several running backs to keep an eye on this season, including the Detroit Lions’ Jahvid Best (+650), the Buffalo Bills’ C.J. Spiller (+800), the Cleveland Browns’ Montario Hardesty (+1500) and the Kansas City Chiefs’ Dexter McCluster. It’s important, however, to choose a player that not only will be productive, but will also help his team win. That’s why Matthews has a clear leg up on the backs listed above.
A tight end has never won the award, making it highly unlikely that Rob Gronkowski of the New England Patriots or Jermaine Gresham of the Cincinnati Bengals will be taking home the honor this season. Again, it appears that sticking with a running back or receiver like Matthews or Bryant is the safest choice.
