The Favorite

Oddsmakers from online sports book Sportsbook.com has made Serena Williams a 2/1 favorite to win this year’s tournament. Other short odds are Venus Williams (7/2), Justine Henin (6/1), and Maria Sharapova (7/1). Serena is a three-time winner of this event and the defending champion as she defeated Venus in straight sets a year ago. Venus and Serena have won eight of the last 10
Wimbledon titles.

Previous Winners

Venus last took the title in 2008 and she has five
Wimbledon titles. She has also finished runner-up in three finals, losing to her sister in all three events. Amelie Mauersmo is the last non-Williams to win the title, as she took the 2006 crown. Mauersmo has since retired from competition. Sharapova won the 2004 title. She has since won two other grand slam titles but has not reached the finals of
Wimbledon again.

Recent Success

In the 2010 French Open, Francesca Schiavone won the women’s title, her first grand slam. She has 80/1 odds to win
Wimbledon. Schiavone beat Samantha Stosur in the finals in straight sets. Stosur has been given 10/1 odds to win
Wimbledon. Serena Williams won the 2010 Australian Open, besting Justine Henin in three sets to claim the title.
