Men’s 1,000M Odds

One of the few speed skating events where an American is favored at the 2010 Winter Olympics is the Men’s 1,000 Meter Speed Skating event.

In this event, the skating takes place on a 400 meter oval ice rink. Timed to one-hundredth of a second, athletes compete in by skating counter-clockwise around the oval and changing lanes once per lap, which equals out the distance.

American Shani Davis is the defending gold medal winner and a two-time world champion for this event, and favored to win the gold in

Vancouver.

Davis has odds of 8/15 to win the gold medal according to online sports book SPORTSBETTING.com. Other short odds to win are Lee Kyou-Hyuk (6/1), Jeremy Wotherspoon (13/2), and Denny Morrison (8/1).

Davis won the gold in the 2006 Olympics for the 1,000 meter and since has won the 2007 and 2008 world championships while finishing third in 2009.

Hyuk skates for

South Korea and he took third in the 2007 world championships for this event. Hyuk has won three world championships in the sprint competition, which combines efforts in the 500 meter and the 1,000 meter.

Wotherspoon skates for

Canada and he has won one world championship in this event in his career, which came in 2001. He took silver in the 1998 and 2004 world championships, but is a four-time world champion in the sprint, winning in 1999, 2000, 2002, and 2003.

Morrison also skates for

Canada, and he finished second in the 2009 world championships for the 1,000 meter, while placing third in 2008.
