Super Bowl MVP Odds
Outside of quarterbacks Peyton Manning and Drew Brees, what players have favorable odds to win the MVP award for Super Bowl XLIV? Let’s take a look.
Oddsmakers from online sports book SBGGLOBAL.com have made the Indianapolis Colts a 4.5-point favorite over the New Orleans Saints for Super Bowl XLIV. The over/under total is currently sitting at 56.5 points.
Along with game odds, SBGGLOBAL.com is also offering MVP prop odds for the NFL title game, with Manning being the favorite to win the honor at –200 money line odds. Brees is listed right behind Manning at +300.
While it would stand to reason that two of the best quarterbacks in the game would be the favorites to take home the Super Bowl MVP hardware, there is some value to be had in other players.
Consider this: Of the last five Super Bowls played, three of the five MVP winners were wide receivers, which is why Reggie Wayne at +1000 and Marques Colston at +1200 offer extreme value. Considering that Wayne and Colston are Manning and Brees’ favorite receiving targets, respectively, there’s a strong possibility that either wideout could win the prestigious honor come Sunday night.
One player that bettors might be intrigued by is Colts’ tight end Dallas Clark, who is +1200 on the money line. But resist the temptation at placing any wager on Clark, because no tight end has won the MVP trophy in the history of the award. While there’s always a first time for everything, Clark represents little to no value, even though he should have a sizeable impact on the game. The same could be said for Saints’ Jeremy Shockey (+2500), who would be an intriguing bet but tight ends just haven’t come up on the MVP radar yet.
Another wager to stay away from is one made on any defensive player. In the last 25 Super Bowls, only four defensive players have won the award, although two did come in the 2000s when Ray Lewis of the Ravens (Super Bowl XXXV) and Dexter Jackson of the Buccaneers (XXXVII) won the award.
That said, if you’re looking for a live long-shot, Darren Sharper of the Saints could play a huge role if the Saints are able to win. He had 71 tackles and nine interceptions this season, three of which he returned for touchdowns.
