One would have thought that as soon as the New York Jets signed disgruntled cornerback Darrelle Revis to a new four-year contract on Sunday night that their Super Bowl odds would have adjusted immediately.
But they haven’t. Not in the slightest, actually.
According to online sports book Sportsbook.com, the Jets’ opened at 10/1 to win Super Bowl XLV, 6/1 to win the AFC and +130 on the money line to win the AFC East. They also had an over/under win total of 9.5 games.
As the Revis contract situation got a little messier throughout the weeks, the Jets fell to 12/1 to win the 2011 Super Bowl and 11/2 to win the AFC, while their money line odds stayed at +130 to win the AFC East.
Now that Revis is back to practice and seemingly happy, a quick look at the Jets’ season odds for this year results in monotony: 12/1 to win the Super Bowl, 11/2 to win the AFC and +130 to win the AFC East. Their season win total remains at 9.5 games, as well.
So what gives? Why, if the Jets are guaranteed to now have their best defender back for the regular season, would oddsmakers leave the team’s lines where they’re at?
One reason could be that they’re trying to get more action back on the Jets after losing it when Revis continued to holdout. The Jets were less attractive without Revis and at 10/1, so now that he’s back they can leave it at 12/1 in hopes that the public will be back and push it back down to 10/1. If the odds return to 10/1 (which may happen soon), then this is likely what transpired.
But if you loved the Jets at 10/1, then regardless of what the oddsmakers’ reasons for leaving it at 12/1, there’s no better time then to jump on the Jets now. Because thanks to Revis, Rex Ryan and a nasty defense, they’re going to compete again this year.
