The New York Liberty open the WNBA semifinals at the Atlanta Dream on Sunday afternoon as a four-point road underdog. Atlanta won 30 games and finished first in the Eastern Conference. New York won 26 and backed into the eighth seed. Then the Liberty swept the top-seeded Minnesota Lynx by 16 points in both games. That result reshaped a series price that looked settled a week ago. Below are the full Game 1 numbers, the public split, and the two spots where this opener looks reachable.

New York Liberty vs. Atlanta Dream Betting Preview
Atlanta earned this spot the straightforward way. The Dream went 30-14, took the East, and built it on defense. Basketball-Reference credits them with the league’s second-best defensive rating, and they led the WNBA at 9.1 steals per game. Angel Reese won Defensive Player of the Year while averaging 16.4 points and 12.1 rebounds. Allisha Gray led the scoring at 19.0 per game, with Rhyne Howard at 17.7 and Jordin Canada distributing 7.3 assists a night. The Dream then handled Washington without drama, winning 92-77 at home and 93-75 on the road. It is Atlanta’s first semifinal appearance since 2018. Brionna Jones remains out for the season with a leg injury, which thins an already short rotation.
New York arrived by a stranger route. The Liberty lost Satou Sabally to a season-ending head injury after 13 games, and Sabrina Ionescu missed 13 games of her own. Leonie Fiebich also sat for stretches. That is how a defending-pedigree roster finishes 26-18. The group that showed up in the first round looked nothing like that record. New York won 91-75 in Minnesota, then closed it out 87-71 at home to become the first No. 8 seed to eliminate a No. 1 seed in league history. Breanna Stewart averaged 20.8 points and 8.3 rebounds across 42 regular-season games. Jonquel Jones put up 21 points and 13 rebounds in the clincher. For more on how that upset unfolded, see our Lynx vs Liberty prediction from Game 2.
The season series went 2-1 to Atlanta, though the shape of it matters more than the record. New York won the June 11 Commissioner’s Cup meeting in Atlanta by 104-90. The Dream then took both September games in Brooklyn, 95-84 on the 21st and 83-65 two nights later. Stewart sat out that second one with soreness. So Atlanta has one win over a full-strength Liberty team this season, by 11 points, on the road.

Liberty vs. Dream Prediction — The Game Stewart Watched From the Bench
Start with the number that is doing the most work in this market. Atlanta’s 83-65 win on September 23 was a defensive clinic, and 148 combined points is a genuinely low figure for these two offenses. Stewart did not play in it. The two meetings where she did produced 194 points in June and 179 points on September 21. That is a wide gap, and it is not a small sample quirk. Stewart carries a 20.8-point scoring average and draws help defense on every post touch. Remove her and New York’s half-court offense slows to a crawl. She is expected to start on Sunday.
The first-round scoring also deserves context before anyone projects it forward. All four of those games were low. Every one of them, however, came against a top-four defense. Minnesota ranked fourth in defensive rating and Washington ranked third, per Basketball-Reference. Neither team draws that caliber of opponent now. New York’s own defense ranked seventh, which is solid rather than suffocating. Meanwhile Atlanta plays at the fourth-fastest pace in the league and averaged 91.3 points a game. New York averaged 89.6 and took 29.3 three-pointers a night at 34.8 percent, third and fourth in the WNBA respectively. Two top-five scoring offenses meeting at roughly 80 possessions is not a grinder by default.
The case against this read is real, and it starts with Atlanta’s defense. A team that forces 9.1 steals a game can drag an opponent into a turnover-heavy slog, and the Dream did exactly that to Washington. Playoff openers also tend to start cautiously, with both staffs feeling out coverages. Ionescu shot only 29.5 percent from three this season, so New York’s volume does not guarantee efficiency. Still, the market itself has leaned one way since the Thursday open. The number has not moved at all, while money has shortened the price on the higher side. A frozen number with one-way price pressure is the market agreeing rather than resisting.
The Pick: Over 172.5 (-110)
Liberty vs. Dream Prediction — Allisha Gray’s Playoff Minutes Are Climbing
Gray was Atlanta’s leading scorer at 19.0 points across 44 regular-season games, on 32.6 minutes a night. Both of those figures have moved in the postseason. Through two playoff games she is averaging 22.0 points on 35.0 minutes. She scored 22 in the Game 2 clincher at Washington, and she also scored 22 against New York on September 23. Rotations compress in a best-of-five, and Atlanta’s is already compressed with Brionna Jones out for the season. Karl Smesko has little reason to rest his best scorer in a semifinal opener at home.
The opposing view is straightforward. Howard and Reese both need touches, and Canada’s 7.3 assists a game get spread around rather than funneled. Gray shot 33.8 percent from three in the regular season. A cold night from the arc forces her to manufacture points at the rim instead. Fiebich is a capable wing defender and will see her often. The honest read is that this edge is modest rather than comfortable. It also leans on the same Atlanta scoring environment as the first play above.
The Pick: Allisha Gray 20+ Points (+100)
Our Final Word on Liberty vs. Dream
One housekeeping note on the two plays above. They are not independent. Both lean on Atlanta scoring freely at home, so a grinding, turnover-soaked Dream win would hurt one and help the other only partially. Size them accordingly. It is also worth explaining why the side sits where it does. Season-long net ratings and standard home-court value point to Atlanta as closer to a six-point favorite. The Liberty’s season numbers, however, were compiled without Sabally, Ionescu and Fiebich for long stretches. A healthy New York is better than its 26-18 record suggests. The market has already shortened the number to account for that. For the companion read on how Atlanta closed out Washington, see our Dream vs Mystics prediction.
Our lead play is Over 172.5 (-110), because the only low-scoring meeting between these teams came with Breanna Stewart out of the lineup. We will also take Allisha Gray 20+ Points (+100), on the strength of a playoff minutes bump to 35.0 a night for Atlanta’s leading scorer.
