Browns coach wouldn’t put Russell Wilson in tier with elite quarterbacks

Browns coach Mike Pettine made headlines on Wednesday by saying he wouldn’t put Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson in the same category as the “elite” signal-callers in the NFL.

From ESPN.com’s Pat McManamon:

“Would you put him there with the guys that can transcend their supporting cast? The [Tom] Bradys, whether it’s Aaron Rodgers, [Drew] Brees, [Ben] Roethlisberger, the ones that you would consider the two, three, four elite guys? No. But he’s certainly played himself into that next tier,” Pettine said Wednesday.

Pettine continued:

“He plays at a high level, he’s very productive and they win,” Pettine said. “Now a lot of that I think is a function, too, is he’s the perfect quarterback for what they do. To me it goes both ways. They’ve also built it around him.”

These two teams play each other in Seattle on Sunday. According to oddsmakers from online sports book BetDSI, the Seahawks are currently a 14-point home favorite over the Browns, with the over/under sitting at 43 points.

Wilson is a Super Bowl champion and doesn’t need any extra motivation to beat an opponent on Sunday. But it’s interesting to see Pettine somewhat poke the bear just days ahead of his team playing the Seahawks in a game that means nothing for Cleveland and everything for Seattle.

And given how red-hot Wilson has been over the past few weeks, it probably would have been wise for Pettine to give a canned response to that question and move on.
