LOS ANGELES, CA (The Spread) – The Angels have made a splash right before the trade deadline, acquiring right-handed starter Zack Greinke from the Brewers.
In exchange for Greinke, the Angels sent shortstop Jean Segura and right-handers Jonny Hellweg and Ariel Pena to Milwaukee. Greinke is 9-3 on the year with a 3.44 ERA and is expected to make his Angels debut on Sunday against the Rays.
Oddsmakers currently list the Yankees as 9/2 favorites to win the 2012 World Series while the Rangers have the next best odds at 11/2. But the Angels are now third at 17/2, while the Tigers are 9/1 and the Cincinnati Reds are 10/1. The Giants and Nationals, who have been tied at the hip for weeks in terms of their World Series odds, are both 11/1, respectively.
Speaking of the Giants, they too made a move on Friday night. They acquired infielder Marco Scutaro from the Rockies in exchange for prospect Charlie Culberson. Scutaro, 36, is hitting .271 with four home runs and 30 RBI in 95 games this season. He’s expected to receive plenty of playing time at both shortstop and second.
One move that might be forthcoming is the Rangers’ acquisition of starter Josh Johnson. USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reports that the Marlins and Rangers are in heavy talks regarding Johnson so stay tuned. Cubs’ starters Ryan Dempster and Matt Garza are reportedly on the trade block as well.
