The idea is pretty simple: If a team can’t score, a team can’t win. With that in mind, lets take a look at the top 15 scoring defenses (as in, don’t allow opponents to score) in college football for 2008.
Rankings and stats can tell bettors a lot. For example, if a college football team is shutting opponents down on a weekly basis, it might be a wise idea to throw a single bet on that team assuming that their opponent isn’t going to see the end zone too much. Or, the under bet might be a solid play given that at least one team is going to have a challenge scoring points.
Now of course, oddsmakers will adjust the point spread and over/under totals when they see that a good defense is in play, but bettors can only use the facts at hand to determine what a solid play is. Below is a ranking of the top 15 scoring defenses in college football for 2008.
- Ohio State
- USC
- Georgia
- Clemson
- Oklahoma
- Auburn
- Michigan
- Penn State
- South Carolina
- Florida State
- Florida
- Oregon
- Arizona State
- Missouri
- LSU
Another thing to note is to consider whether or not these great defensive teams also have a powerful offense. Teams like Missouri, Florida, Georgia, USC, Ohio State and Oklahoma are probably going to score a fair amount of points so watch the over/under total and adjust accordingly.
On the flip side, assuming their opponent isn’t a cupcake and therefore has a poor defense, teams like LSU, Michigan and Penn State are probably going to have issues scoring themselves so the under might be the best play in that game.
