DETROIT (AP) -A person in the NHL tells The Associated Press that Mike Babcock and the Detroit Red Wings have agreed to a 3-year contract for the Stanley Cup winning coach.
The person spoke Tuesday night on the condition of anonymity because the team planned an 11 a.m. Wednesday news conference to announce the deal.
The Wings said Tuesday night they would hold a news conference, but didn’t release details.
Babcock led Detroit to a title in his third season behind the bench after helping the franchise get the most points in the regular season for the second time in three years.
Babcock and the Red Wings had expected to reach an agreement shortly after the season ended last week with Detroit’s win at Pittsburgh, where the team hoisted the Stanley Cup for the fourth time in 11 seasons.
