PITTSBURGH (AP) -Money isn’t the only kind of green the Pittsburgh Penguins are seeking at their new $321 million arena.
The team is pursuing gold status under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification system, known as LEED. The certification is granted by the U.S. Green Building Council if buildings meet certain benchmarks for efficient use of water and electricity, high indoor air quality and local building materials.
The team considered installing solar panels to provide some power, but decided against it because of the cost.
The 18,000-seat Consol Energy Center is scheduled to open for the 2010-2011 season.
