PITTSBURGH (AP) -It’s the NHL’s biggest nightmare at the Vancouver Olympics: a star like Alex Ovechkin, Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin gets hurt.
Because the pressure to win is so great, players such as Crosby and Sergei Gonchar of the Pittsburgh Penguins say they can’t worry about possibly hurting a teammate with a big hit during the Olympics.
But the risk of injuries is making NHL owners reluctant to sign off in participating in the Winter Games beyond this year.
There is no agreement for the NHL to send players to Sochi, Russia, in 2014. The league says injury considerations will be a big factor in the decision whether to go.
