LOS ANGELES (AP) – After a Stanley Cup championship run that stunned everybody but the players in the Los Angeles Kings’ locker room, they’re all back to attempt the improbable again.
Pro sports teams rarely stay together for long these days, but the Kings are an exception. Everybody who touched the ice last spring during the eighth-seeded club’s run to the franchise’s first title has returned.
The Kings even inked coach Darryl Sutter and general manager Dean Lombardi to multiyear contract extensions Friday, keeping together every significant bit of the team that ended 45 years of frustration for Los Angeles hockey fans.
That togetherness could be a significant advantage in the lockout-shortened NHL season, raising talk of a repeat. The Kings will begin Saturday without injured Anze Kopitar and Willie Mitchell, however.
