TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -Mike Green broke the NHL record for consecutive games with a goal by a defenseman, scoring on a power-play at 5:33 of the second period to give the Washington Capitals a 4-0 lead over Tampa Bay on Saturday night.
Green was mobbed by his teammates after breaking the record set by Mike O’Connell for Boston in 1983-84. Green is one off the overall Washington team record of nine consecutive games, set by Alan Haworth (1985-86) and matched by Mike Gartner (1986-87).
Green has 22 goals in 43 games this season.
