MONTREAL (AP) -The Montreal Canadiens are bolstering their defense by signing veteran Marc-Andre Bergeron to a one-year contract.
Bergeron, a defenseman with a hard slap shot, had 14 goals – seven on the power play – and 18 assists in 72 games last season. He agreed to the deal with the Canadiens on Tuesday and will report to Hamilton (AHL) on Wednesday for a conditioning stint.
Bergeron will fill a hole in Montreal’s depleted defense corps after recent injuries to top defenseman Andrei Markov, and Ryan O’Byrne.
The Quebec native, who is entering his eighth NHL season, has also played with Edmonton, the New York Islanders, and Anaheim. He has 62 goals and 98 assists in 339 NHL games.
