BOSTON (AP) -The Boston Bruins have signed right wing Michael Ryder in hopes of strengthening their mediocre offense.
Ryder signed a multiyear contract Tuesday after spending all four of his NHL seasons with the Montreal Canadiens, where he scored 30 goals in two consecutive seasons before dropping to 14 last season.
Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli said the team rated Ryder as the second best forward among free agents. Boston also was interested in Pittsburgh right wing Marian Hossa, who has scored at least 29 goals in eight of his 10 NHL seasons.
The Bruins defense was solid last season, their first under coach Claude Julien. But their 212 goals scored were the sixth fewest in the NHL.
