BOSTON (AP) -Derek Morris is the newest member of the Bruins, joining them one day after Boston traded another veteran defenseman, Aaron Ward.
The Bruins announced Saturday that the free agent, who finished last season with the New York Rangers, had signed a one-year contract. Boston dealt Ward to the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday.
Morris, 30, spent the first five of his 11 NHL seasons with Calgary, then played nearly two full seasons with Colorado before going to Phoenix late in the 2003-04 season. The Coyotes traded him to the Rangers late last season.
The 6-foot, 220-pound Morris is a better offensive defenseman and more durable than Ward. In 793 regular-season NHL games, Morris has 76 goals and 264 assists.
