Caps win at Flames
Washington earned a 5-3 victory Tuesday night at Calgary to improve to 7-2-2 on the season. After a scoreless first period, John Carlson opened the scoring for the Capitals 35 seconds into the second period on a goal assisted by Alex Ovechkin and T.J. Oshie. Chandler Stephenson made it a 2-0 game two minutes later, but the Flames proceeded to tie it at 2-2 with 3:35 left in the second. Ovechkin gave Washington the lead back 10 seconds later with assists going to Nicklas Backstrom and Radko Gudas. Tom Wilson pushed it to 4-2 with 7:26 to go in the third period on a goal assisted by Lars Eller and Michal Kempny. Carlson made it 5-2 with 1:45 remaining, while Calgary scored its final goal in the last minute. Braden Holtby made 32 saves on 35 shots in the winning effort.
Oilers shut out for second straight game
Edmonton suffered its second consecutive shutout loss Tuesday night at Minnesota as it fell by a score of 3-0. The Oilers surrendered all three goals in the first period and could not rebound from the early deficit. Patrick Russell, Matthew Benning and Oscar Klefbom led Edmonton with three shots on goal each out of the 25 as a team. Mike Smith recorded 27 saves on 30 in the defeat.
NHL Betting Trends
Washington
The Capitals are 5-1 in their last six road games. Washington is 20-6 in its last 26 Thursday games.
Edmonton
The Oilers are 12-26 in their last 38 games as a home underdog. Edmonton is 4-0 in its last four home games.
Prediction:
Washington is as good as anyone in the NHL on the offensive end of the ice right now, but leaves a lot to be desired on the defensive end. With Edmonton at home and its biggest issue struggling to score goals, this could be the perfect opponent. The Capitals are on their third game on this road trip and with the Oilers having a couple of the NHL’s top offensive players in Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, I think the hosts bust out in this one.
