Philadelphia is playing a back-to-back after winning its opener 5-3 Wednesday night at the Sharks. The Flyers finished last season with a 39-33-10 record to miss out on the playoffs. Los Angeles finished last year 39-35-8 to also miss the playoffs. The two meetings were split last year, with the road team winning both games. The total was 1-1.
In Wednesday’s victory, Wayne Simmonds registered a hat trick to lead the Flyers. Claude Giroux and Jordan Weal each had a goal as well. Shayne Gostisbehere recorded three assists. Sean Couturier and Travis Konecny each had one assist. Brian Elliott made 32 saves in the victory. Michael Neuvirth (11-11-1, 2.82 GAA, .891 save pct.) will likely get the start in goal for Philadelphia tonight on the back-to-back.
Los Angeles was led last year by Jeff Carter (32 G, 34 A) and Anze Kopitar (12 G, 40 A). Jonathan Quick is healthy again after going 8-5-2 with a 2.26 GAA and a .917 save percentage last year before going down for the season with an injury.
The Flyers are one of two teams, along with the Penguins, that might be the first to experience fatigue this season as both play on a back-to-back tonight. Philadelphia was actually slightly better than anticipated last season yet still was left out of the playoff picture. Neuvirth is expected to be in net tonight and he was not in good form a year ago. While the Kings are typically strong defensively and Quick is back between the pipes, this has the makings of a game that goes over the total.
