Golden Knights unable to recover from deficit
Las Vegas fell behind 3-0 in the second period and were unable to bounce back Wednesday night in its 5-2 Game 1 loss at San Jose. The Golden Knights got on the board with 11:28 remaining in the second period on a Mark Stone goal assisted by Paul Stastny and Max Pacioretty. The Sharks added a goal late in the second, while in the third period Stone cut it back to 4-2 with his second goal of the contest at the 4:34 mark. It was assisted by Shea Theodore and Pacioretty. Marc-Andre Fleury surrendered four goals on 32 shots in the losing effort.
Pavelski loses teeth on goal
San Jose veteran Joe Pavelski scored a goal off his mouth, losing two teeth in the process, to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage in the first period Wednesday night en route to a 5-2 victory over Las Vegas in Game 1. Brent Burns was given an assist on the goal as it was his shot that struck Pavelski in the mouth before going into the net. Burns made it 2-0 with 13:01 left in the second on assists from Erik Karlsson and Tomas Hertl. Marc-Edouard Vlasic pushed it to 3-0 45 seconds later on assists by Joe Thornton and Evander Kane. The Golden Knights got on the board shortly thereafter, but with 18 seconds left in the period Kane found the back of the net on assists courtesy of Karlsson and Gustav Nyquist. Following a Las Vegas goal in the third period, the Sharks put it away with 1:49 remaining on a Hertl goal off assists by Logan Couture and Vlasic. Martin Jones secured 24 saves on 26 shots to notch the victory.
NHL Betting Trends
Las Vegas
The Golden Knights are 5-16 in their last 21 games as a road underdog. Las Vegas is 1-5 in its last six games on one day of rest.
San Jose
The Sharks are 5-0 in their last five conference quarterfinals games. San Jose is 23-9 in its 32 games following a win.
Prediction:
San Jose looked strong at home and shook off the fact it was a little shaky down the stretch in the regular season. The Sharks have an explosive offense that gets contributions from a lot of sources and Las Vegas had no answer in Game 1. While I see the Golden Knights winning won if not two games on their home ice, I think San Jose wins another one before the series shifts cities.
