Ilya Sorokin allowed four goals on 34 shots during Thursday’s 4-0 loss to the New Jersey Devils. Sorokin’s stat line doesn’t look good, but he was arguably the Islanders’ best player tonight. He did what he could to keep them in the game, but they just couldn’t score on Devils netminder Mackenzie Blackwood. Sorokin now has a 5-3-2 record with a 2.18 goals-against-average and a .933 save percentage this season.

Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 26-of-28 shots in Saturday’s 3-2 overtime win over the Florida Panthers. Let’s get the bad out of the way first, so as to end on a positive note. The bad: Vasilevskiy coughed up goals to Jonathan Huberdeau and Eetu Luostarinen in the second period, the latter of which brought Florida back for the tie after they had fallen behind 2-0 on the scoreboard. The good: Vasilevskiy worked scoreless first, third and overtime periods. We would say that the good outweighed the bad on this night. Vasilevskiy has been playing a stellar crease after a slightly wobbly open to the season, having now ripped off six consecutive starts with two or fewer goals allowed. For reference’s sake, he started the season yielding at least three goals in four of five outings. Full speed ahead for the star netminder at this juncture. A Monday showdown with the Islanders shows next on Tampa Bay’s schedule.
