Camp to Open
Traverse City, MI – The Detroit Red Wings open training camp Sunday, hoping for another shot at winning the Stanley Cup that narrowly eluded them last season.
Camp in Traverse City will be shorter than usual, at just three days, as the regular season starts early this year to accomodate a scheduled layoff for the Winter Olympics.
As if falling one game short in the finals against Pittsburgh weren’t enough, the Red Wings also lost Marian Hossa and Mikael Samuelsson to free agency. Also gone is Jiri Hudler, who decided to play in Russia.
Because of the salary cap, the Wings weren’t big shoppers in the offseason free agent market. Instead, they’re hoping younger players such as Darren Helm, Justin Abdelkader and Jonathan Ericsson can contribute.
