Thompson blanks Ducks

Logan Thompson turned aside all 19 shots faced during Tuesday’s 3-0 home win over the Ducks. Thompson recorded his first shutout of the season and now stands at 19-2-3 through just 24 starts in his inaugural campaign with the Capitals. Only an evenly split workload with Charlie Lindgren (upper body) has hindered Thompson’s breakout, but Thompson is expected to get the bulk of the starts with the latter now on the injured list.

Merilainen makes 24 saves in shutout of Islanders

Leevi Merilainen made 24 saves in Tuesday’s 2-0 win over the Islanders. All of a sudden, the 22-year-old rookie might be the hottest goalie in the NHL. Merilainen has started three straight games and won all three, with two of those outings producing his first two career shutouts. In seven outings since he was called up in mid-December, he’s gone 5-2-0 with a 1.98 GAA and .925 save percentage, and the Senators appear willing to give him a shot at taking the No. 1 job away from Anton Forsberg. There’s no timeline yet for Linus Ullmark (back) to make his return from IR, but the Sens could have a dilemma on their hands when he does — or an opportunity to trade one of their veteran netminders — if Merilainen is still surging.

Capitals vs. Senators Betting Prediction

Next to the Blue Jackets, who have won five straight, the Senators are the hottest team in the league right now. That said, all good things must come to an end. No team in the NHL has more points than the Capitals’ 63, although the Jets have the same number. The Caps are also an impressive 14-6-1 record on the road this season and a +46 point differential. Washington didn’t fare well last season against Ottawa, dropping two out of the three games versus the Senators. That said, this is a different Caps team.

Capitals vs. Senators Prediction: WASHINGTON CAPITALS -110
