WASHINGTON (AP) -The Hall of Fame cornerback who led a lawsuit on behalf of retired players says the settlement reached with the players’ union “is better than running a touchdown back in the Super Bowl.”
Herb Adderley actually did return an interception for six points in Super Bowl II, but on Friday he proudly stood with new NFL Players Association executive director DeMaurice Smith to announce that a long-simmering rift had been healed.
Adderly and thousands of other retired players had successfully sued the union for cutting them out of lucrative marketing deals. The union was planning to appeal, but it reversed course and settled the suit this week for $26.25 million.
Smith said the settlement was “one small step” toward resolving other issues with retired players.
