DENVER (AP) -Prosecutors say a request for a new trial for the man convicted of killing Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams could delay this week’s sentencing.
Attorneys for Willie Clark asked District Judge Christina Habas last week for a new trial, alleging jury misconduct. Among other things, they say a juror received a text message about the case during deliberations.
chief deputy district attorney Tim Twining disputes the allegations. He says prosecutors will need time to prepare their arguments.
Habas hasn’t said whether she will grant a hearing to consider the matter.
Clark was convicted last month of first-degree murder in Williams’ death on New Year’s Day 2007. He faces life in prison.
His sentencing is scheduled for Friday.
