NEW ORLEANS (AP) -Saints coach Sean Payton says running back and fan favorite Deuce McAllister will be an honorary captain but will not play in the club’s playoff opener Saturday against Arizona.
Payton said the Saints had previously discussed making McAllister an honorary guest for the game. When reserve defensive tackle Rodney Leisle hurt his knee, the Saints decided they would be able to re-sign McAllister, making him an official part of the team.
The 31-year-old McAllister was waived by the Saints shortly after last season. He has been working out on his own since, hoping to get back into the NFL.
He is the Saints’ career rushing leader with 6,096 yards. His 55 total touchdowns and 49 rushing TDs also are club records.
