EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -Washington Redskins starting left cornerback Shawn Springs was inactive for the season opener against the New York Giants on Thursday night because of a shin injury.
Jason Taylor, the defensive end who was traded to the Redskins by Miami, was active for the game and was listed to start. He has only practiced on a limited basis this week because of a knee injury.
Fred Smoot got the starting assignment for Springs.
Rookie Colt Brennan was the Redskins’ third quarterback. Also inactive were wide receiver Malcolm Kelly (knee), safety Kareem Moore, linebacker Alfred Fincher, offensive lineman Chad Rinehart, tight end Fred Davis and defensive end Rob Jackson.
The most surprising active for the Giants was defensive end Dave Tollefson, who has been the No. 3 defensive end behind Justin Tuck and Mathias Kiwanuka since Osi Umenyiora was hurt about two weeks ago.
Also inactive were kicker Lawrence Tynes, halfback Reuben Droughns, cornerbacks Terrell Thomas and Sam Madison, linebacker Jonathan Goff, offensive lineman Adam Koets and rookie receiver Mario Manningham.
Tynes (knee), Goff (back) and Thomas (hamstring) were ruled out earlier this week.
