ASHBURN, Va. (AP) – An error by a member of the chain gang is one reason the Washington Redskins appeared to get a fifth down in their final drive against Tampa Bay.
When the Redskins got a first down late in the game, the ball was spotted outside the Buccaneers’ 12-yard line – yet the auxiliary down marker was set at the 3 – less than the requisite 10 yards.
When Anthony Armstrong caught a pass at the 2 1/2 on the next play, officials awarded a first down. However, the game’s official statisticians awarded him only a 9-yard gain that would have created a second-and-1, creating confusion in press box as well as for those watching the Fox broadcast.
Players on both teams were unaware of the confusion. The Redskins, with first-and-goal, ran four more plays and scored.
