NEW YORK (AP) -Jets punter Steve Weatherford’s tweaked right hamstring is “feeling better,” but still has some tightness a day before the team’s must-win game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday night.
Weatherford injured the hamstring in practice Friday, and coach Rex Ryan said the Jets would work out punters Saturday as a contingency plan. The team didn’t sign anyone despite bringing some players in, an indication Weatherford might be fine for the game which the Jets (8-7) need to win to make the playoffs.
If Weatherford plays but aggravates the injury during the game, kicker Jay Feely would take over the punting duties. Weatherford won the job in training camp and is averaging 41.9 gross yards, and 37.1 net.
