WELLESLEY, Mass. (AP) – Erik Ainge wants no pity from anyone.
The New York Jets backup quarterback no longer feels sorry for himself. He insists no one else should, either.
Ainge has been on a tumultuous journey – marked by years of drug and alcohol abuse. It’s taken him from high school star in Oregon to big man on campus at the University of Tennessee and all the way to the NFL.
Now he’s a recovering drug addict with bipolar disorder and a surgically repaired foot, trying to rebuild his once-shattered life under the roof of his famous uncle Danny.
Ainge recently met with The Associated Press for a day-long interview in the Boston area. He says he’s “learning how to be a new person” and is eager to put his troubled past behind him.
