BEREA, Ohio (AP) -Mike Holmgren is starting his first season as Cleveland Browns president in a leg cast.
Holmgren prefers to talk about the Browns’ upcoming season rather than his recovery from right foot surgery.
After 17 years as a pro coach, Holmgren said his new role has him as excited as he has been entering a season. He believes the Browns’ rebuilding program is going well and expressed confidence that coach Eric Mangini will be able to assemble a team that can improve upon last season’s 5-11 record.
Holmgren said the acquisition of 35-year-old quarterback Jake Delhomme brings experienced leadership to a team that was sorely lacking a veteran presence in recent years.
Holmgren also believes No. 1 draft choice, cornerback Joe Haden, could be signed by the time camp opens Saturday.
