EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -Justin Tuck signed a $30 million, five-year contract extension Friday that could keep the defensive end with the New York Giants through 2013.
Tuck, who had a career-high 10 sacks this season, finalized the deal just two days before the Giants (12-6) were to play the Packers in the NFC championship.
“I don’t think this says anything more than what it always says about the Giants,” Tuck said. “The Giants are a top-notch organization and they love their players and they want to keep their players here. They really stepped up as far as keeping me here. I am happy about it and I’m sure they are, too.”
Doug Hendrickson, Tuck’s agent, started talks with the Giants in October and the two sides reached an agreement late Thursday.
“The Giants very much respect the character and talent of Justin and they wanted to keep him,” Hendrickson said in a telephone interview from his Walnut Creek, Calif., office.
Tuck will earn $520,000 next season under the final year of the contract that he signed as a third-round draft choice out of Notre Dame in 2005.
Hendrickson said $16 million of the new contract is guaranteed and Tuck will receive $22.5 million in the first three years of the new deal. He also can earn an extra $3 million in final two years with escalator clauses.
General manager Jerry Reese had no comment Friday, spokesman Pat Hanlon said.
Tuck played in six games last season before needing foot surgery. He played in all 16 games this year, making 58 tackles, defending three passes and forcing a fumble. He had only one sack in his first two seasons.
