FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) -The New England Patriots released defensive lineman Kenny Smith and punter Tom Malone on Wednesday.
Smith, who missed the last two NFL seasons after playing his first four with New Orleans, had signed as a free agent on June 8.
With the Saints, he started 10 of the 30 games he played and had 4 1/2 sacks after they drafted him in the third round out of Alabama. He then joined Oakland as a free agent but was placed on injured reserve and missed the 2005 season. He was out of football last year.
Smith signed with Tampa Bay last March 7 and was released less than two months later.
Malone’s departure leaves the punting job to Danny Baugher, who spent much of last season on the Patriots practice squad. Malone was signed to the practice squad Dec. 20.
Veteran punter Josh Miller was released last week.
