DAVIE, Fla. (AP) -With Ricky Williams out for the season, Miami Dolphins running back Jesse Chatman figures he’ll have to play hurt.
Hampered by ankle and neck injuries, Chatman practiced Wednesday and is expected to start Sunday against the New York Jets.
As expected, Williams was placed on injured reserve with a torn chest muscle. He was hurt in Monday’s loss at Pittsburgh, his first game in nearly two years.
The winless Dolphins re-signed running back Samkon Gado. He was awarded off waivers from Houston on Oct. 24, then was waived Monday when Miami activated Williams.
Chatman hurt his ankle at Philadelphia on Nov. 18, then missed the second half of Monday’s loss at Pittsburgh with a neck injury.
“Got to keep pushing on,” he said following practice Wednesday. “That’s how the great ones do it. It’s that time of year when everybody’s banged up. You see who wants it the most.”
There’s little depth behind Chatman, with Gado, Patrick Cobbs and rookie Lorenzo Booker the other running backs on the roster.
Defensive tackle Vonnie Holliday sat out practice with a right ankle injury, and his status for Sunday is uncertain. Middle linebacker Zach Thomas, who has missed the past four games because of migraines, still awaits clearance to join practice.
Rehabilitation for Williams is expected to take five months. The injury came in his first game since returning from a 1 1/2-year suspension for violating the NFL drug policy.
“It’s unfortunate,” coach Cam Cameron said. “As he and I talked, it’s another test for him and another obstacle for him to overcome, and he knows that we’re going to support him.”
