CLEVELAND (AP) -Cleveland Browns punter Dave Zastudil will not play in the team’s season opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday because of a back injury.
Zastudil’s back injury limited his participation in practice in the week leading up to the team’s regular season debut. He had been listed as questionable by the team Friday.
Zastudil, in his second year with the Browns, enjoyed a strong campaign last season, averaging a career-high 44 yards per kick. He played in all 16 games for Cleveland last season.
The Browns signed punter Paul Ernster on Saturday. Ernster appeared in all 16 games last season for the Denver Broncos, averaging 36.6 yards per kick. He also ranked third in the league with 19 touchbacks on kickoffs.
Ernster was waived by the Broncos on Aug. 29.
The Browns also waived defensive back Jereme Perry on Saturday.
