ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) -Bills starting free safety George Wilson was placed on injured reserve Friday, ending his season less than a week after he broke two ribs.
Wilson becomes Buffalo’s fifth defensive regular and 14th player to be placed on the season-ending list this year. Coach Dick Jauron had been hoping that Wilson would be able to return should the Bills make the playoffs.
Buffalo (7-6) has won six of its past eight games to climb into the AFC playoff race, and is preparing for a critical showdown at Cleveland (8-5) Sunday.
Wilson was hurt when he was hit trying to catch a short kickoff late in the first quarter of a 38-17 win over the Miami Dolphins last weekend. He spent two days in the hospital before being released Tuesday.
Earlier in the game, he scored on a 20-yard fumble return, his second touchdown this season.
Wilson, a converted receiver who made the switch to defense this offseason, took over at free safety in Week 5 after starter Ko Simpson (broken ankle) was placed on IR and backup Jim Leonhard missed three games with a calf injury.
Leonhard is expected to start against the Browns.
The Bills should also have back starting defensive end Chris Kelsay, who had missed the past two games with a left ankle injury. A fourth-year starter, Kelsay returned to practice Wednesday and is listed as questionable on the Bills injury report.
Reserve linebacker Coy Wire is listed as out and will miss his third straight game with a neck injury.
To fill Wilson’s spot on the roster, the Bills promoted linebacker Blake Costanzo from their practice squad.
